Survey Says.. Stop

Is it just me, or are we as a society more petty and spoiled than ever? Why do we, as a whole, whine and complain about the most trivial things? One of the craziest I have noticed in recent times is so far off base its unreal. I’m talking about Richard Dawson kissing the female contestants when he was host of “Family Feud”. Some of the comments I see on YouTube videos, and around the Internet are just plain whack. To add to the craziness, some of these people were not even alive at the time, or very young. Whether you were on the scene or not, here’s the question. WHAT difference does this make NOW??? This is not something you will see on TV today. It was a different era, a completely different time. Having come of age during those days, and being a female myself, I can tell you from experience I never heard anyone say a negative word about it. Most people seemed to find it quite amusing. It was no big deal. Yet, people care now? Initially, it did get some attention, including hate mail about a white host kissing black women, then white women the next minute. For a while, the kissing stopped. Richard asked the audience to voice their opinion by writing in. He would go along with what the majority wanted. After a few months, and quite a few letters, viewers overwhelmingly decided the kisses should continue, which they did until 1985, which was when the show ended.

Maybe it’s because I had this huge crush on Richard Dawson, but the kissing never bothered me, nor does it now. If anything, I would daydream about my family going on Family Feud, and getting a kiss myself. We did seriously consider it at one point, but the adults chickened out. Sure enough, the other females in question were excited about the possibility of kissing Richard, too. I had plenty of company. If you carefully watch those videos on YouTube, you rarely see a woman object to being kissed, or back away. They enjoyed it. Here’s a little more background info. Before getting kissed, every female had to give her consent in advance, so nothing was forced upon anyone.

Richard Dawson is almost 80 years old now. He is retired. Last I checked, Steve Harvey hosts Feud now, and isn’t kissing anyone. So, why are people uptight about something that took place during the Carter and Reagan administrations? Save that anger and passion for things which MATTER, like child abuse, homelessness, hunger- instead of the actions of a former game show host.

  1. Reminds me of this classic scene from Network:

    http://goodlooksblog.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/circa-1978-network/

At least now we have the agency to speak up, whereas in Dawson’s age it was much harder (Nowadays, most would be too lazy to write in). At the same time, this agency has led to a lot more clutter and complaints, as you point out. Luckily, Youtube refreshes comments pretty quickly..

  2. Richard Dawson has passed away. Many probably do not know that he married one of the females that he kissed!!!! He and Gretchen dated for 10 years then married in 1991. They share a daughter, Shannon.

There are more serious things in our society happening now that we should spend time and effort on then this. May he rest in peace and his family know how much he meant to all of us….

  3. hello!,I love your writing so so much! percentage we be in contact more approximately your article on AOL?
I require an expert in this house to resolve my problem.

  4. Well done, Richard. Rest in peace.

  5. Richard Dawson had a contestant, Larry Hagman. Both died in 2012. On the very day Larry died, Elaine Haltek from Chicago died.
